How to play craps

The game of craps is played with a set of two dice that are each six-sided. These dice are thrown on a craps table that is typically covered in felt. The lowest total that can be rolled with two dice is 2, achieved by rolling a 1 on both dice. The highest total is 12, achieved by rolling a 6 on both dice.

Casino dice are precision engineered to very specific size and weight standards, to cut out the chance of any numbers appearing more or less frequently than any others. Furthermore, the dice are normally imprinted with the logo of the casino and a code that is individually specific to each unique pair of dice. In online casinos, heavily tested and audited random number generators are used to ensure that there is no artificial bias.

Responsibility for throwing the dice passes clockwise round the table, giving all participants an equal chance at throwing the dice, though there is no obligation to be the shooter and many people declne. The person currently rolling the dice is called the Shooter. Whatever the shooter throws determines whether the bets on the table are won, lost or remain in play.

The dice must be thrown from one side of the table to the other and almost all casinos request that the dice hit the opposite back wall to insure no loaded dice or cheating. The results of each throw determine the payoffs.

The basic idea behind craps is to roll a "point" (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10) on the come-out roll and then after that point is established, the dice thrower (shooter) wants to roll that same point number before he/she rolls a 7. If a 7 is thrown, then the point is lost and the process starts over. If the point is thrown, then the process also starts over again.
The game itself is therefore pretty simple – what makes it a little more complicated is the wide variety of bets that are available to make on the outcome of the rolls.
